What is the additional space for the addition of trace elements in pig and poultry feed under the announcement of No. 2625?

Trace element maximum amount 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, service animal husbandry

On December 15, 2017, the Ministry of Agriculture of China issued Announcement No. 2625 and officially implemented it on July 1, 2018. The announcement stipulates the maximum limit of trace elements such as iron, copper, zinc, manganese, iodine, cobalt, selenium and chromium in compound feed or fully mixed diet. It is clearly stated in the announcement that the maximum limit in the compound feed or fully mixed diet is calculated on the basis of 88% dry matter content, and the maximum limit includes the feed material background value. So what is the maximum limit of several trace elements? Take pig and poultry as an example, we have summarized the following table for everyone, please refer to (Table 1). 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

The total amount of trace elements is limited in the announcement, and the maximum amount includes the background value of the feed ingredients. The formulator must consider the trace element content from the feed ingredients when making the formula. So what is the background value of trace elements in compound feed or mixed diet under different formula systems? We take the pigs in each growth stage as an example, referring to the US NRC, French INRA, Dutch CVB and Chinese scholars' summary of Chinese feed. The case of the medium and trace element background values is shown in Table 2 - Table 4. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

From Tables 2 and 3, we can easily find that the iron content derived from the feed background value is very high, and the variability of pig feed at different stages is also very large: 125-223 ppm. In addition, the content of zinc and manganese is not low. Under the US formula system, corn-soybean meal-whey powder-fish meal-plasma protein-hydrogen calcium-stone powder type piglet diet and corn-soybean meal-hydrogen calcium-stone powder type growth and fattening pig diet have about 28 ppm zinc and 16 Phenol of ppm, and a joint study by Alltech-Zhejiang University Research Alliance found that there are up to 43-44 ppm of manganese and zinc in the corn-soybean-sub-powder-soybean oil type diet. It can be seen that the levels of trace elements in raw materials of different formula systems and different origins vary greatly. However, if you consider the announcement No. 2625, the formulator should pay attention to the extra addition of copper and zinc in the feed. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

Sources: French INRA and Dutch CVB from EFSA Journal 2012 and 2014; China data from Prof. Yu Bing's report “Copper and Zinc Nutrition and Modern Pig Production” 2017. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

Table 4 summarizes the contents of copper and zinc in pig feed ingredients by French INRA, Dutch CVB and Chinese scholars. In the case of sows, the feed copper has a copper and zinc content of up to 10+ and 40+ ppm, while the 2625 announcement allows for an upper limit of 25 and 100 ppm, so the space left for the recipe is only ~15 and ~ 60 ppm. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

It can be seen from the table that the extra supplementary space of some trace elements is not very large, especially the additional upper limit of the boar/sow copper is only 10-20 ppm; the addition of copper in the growing fattening pig can only be 10-18. Ppm; and its zinc addition is only between 35-55 ppm. How to add relatively low doses of trace elements under the premise of coping with environmental pressures and ensuring and even improving animal performance? This requires us to know the right products and technical guidance. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

As shown in Table 6-Table 7, the author summarizes the contribution of trace elements in the dietary feed values of breeders, broilers and laying hens under different formula systems. Similarly, the iron background content is very high. In theory, poultry is iron. The demand is not high, can you consider reducing the extra addition of iron? For zinc, the background of some formulations can contribute up to 50 ppm, leaving only 70 ppm for the formulator, compared to the previous level of addition. The gap is still very large. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry

In addition to iodine, the No. 2625 announcement has the same upper limit for the addition of trace elements to poultry (poultry, poultry, and egg poultry). Compared with pigs, poultry feed has little pressure to add trace elements. As shown in Table 8, the use of zinc should be emphasized in the formulation. From July 1, 2018, the additional zinc content should not exceed 57-95 ppm. But the role of zinc in poultry is critical, with many feed formulations up to 120 ppm. Therefore, under the premise that the current regulations do not allow excessive addition, the appropriate zinc source should be selected to meet the needs of poultry for growth, reproduction and optimal immunity. The use of organic trace elements is more necessary. 6CY China Feed Industry Information Network - based on feed, serving animal husbandry
