Researchers create paper bacterial fuel cells
In order to bring low-cost, high-portability degradable batteries to remote areas, researchers from Binghamton University have developed a bacteria-driven fuel cell. In fact, they have developed this battery a year ago, but now they make the battery body more convenient to carry and more convenient to use. It is reported that the bacterial fuel cell that was originally built is like a magnified matchboard. Now it has become more flexible - it can be folded, and its power will vary depending on the degree of folding.
In the latest version of the battery, the researchers changed the sprayed nickel plating solution used in the cathode to a silver nitrate strip and a thin layer of wax on the silver nitrate strip. The anode is formed of water containing bacteria which is placed in a container made of a conductive polymer. The two stages are placed at the ends of the chromatography paper. When the paper is folded, the circuit is formed and the microorganisms continue to supply power.
In addition, such batteries can also produce different amounts of electrical power and current depending on the degree of folding. Taking a battery pack of 6 as an example, when the folding specification is 2x3, it can generate electric power of 31.51 microwatts and current of 125.53 microamperes; if it becomes 6x6 specification, it generates electric power and current of 44.85 respectively. Microwatts and 105.89 microamps.
This low cost, portability, ease of use, and degradable battery is very attractive for remote areas, battlefields, or areas where emergency situations occur.
