They then used the powder as aggregate in polymer concrete instead of the commonly used sand. Polymer concrete itself uses polymer resin instead of cement as a binder, and is often used in applications such as waterproof flooring.
When the glass-based polymer concrete was subsequently tested, it was found to be significantly stronger than its traditional sand-based counterpart. In addition, the use of glass can reduce the cost of concrete production.
Al-Ameri said: "This study provides evidence that the construction industry may see the potential of glass as a substitute for sand when manufacturing polymer concrete." In fact, Deakin University is not the first Australian university to explore the use of recycled glass in concrete.
