US developed a high-sensitivity car drunk driving detection system
According to a World Health Organization survey, about 50% to 60% of traffic accidents are related to drink driving. This kind of harm has become the biggest cause of traffic accidents. Recently, American researchers have developed a highly sensitive on-board alcohol detection system. Once the driver's body alcohol content is exceeded, the car will not start. Its application will greatly reduce drunk driving behavior and kill traffic accidents caused by drunk driving in the bud.
The system was named the Driver Alcohol Safety Inspection System (DADSS) and its mission is to use alcohol detection technology on vehicles. The system is said to be able to detect the alcohol content in the driver's blood in one second. If the driver's blood alcohol content exceeds 0.08% (the drunk driving standard stipulated by US law), the car will not start. For drivers under the age of 21, a zero-tolerance policy is adopted, as long as alcohol is detected, no matter how many vehicles are not available.
In order to obtain accurate and reliable data, researchers are exploring two detection techniques based on breathing and contact, respectively. Earlier this month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the first prototype of an in-vehicle alcohol detection system in the United States.
The system is equipped with sensors that monitor the driver's breathing. The sensor can be mounted on the driver's door or steering wheel to emit infrared detection gas molecules. Because carbon dioxide and alcohol molecules absorb light differently, the sensor compares the two after receiving the data, and even at low concentrations, the driver's body alcohol content can be accurately determined. If the ratio of alcohol molecules to carbon dioxide exceeds a certain range, it indicates that the alcohol content at this time exceeds the standard.
In addition, there is a set of alcohol detection technology based on skin contact. The sensor will be placed on the ignition button or the handle of the car. When the driver touches these places, the sensor underneath will detect the level of alcohol in the blood under the driver's skin.
In the future, when the system is approved for commercial use, people will be able to add or install such systems at the time of purchase, just like the optional emergency brake assist system and lane departure warning system. Mark Rothkind, director of the US Highway Safety Administration, said in an interview with the US media that the system provides a choice for car owners and also provides a powerful new tool for combating drunk driving.
Participating in the development of the system are the US Highway Safety Administration and the American Automobile Transportation Safety Alliance, which represents the automobile manufacturer, and the research and testing are conducted by independent engineers and scientists. In addition, the program is supported by a number of American wine industry associations, including the American Distilled Liquor Council, the American Beer Wholesalers Association, and the American Wine and Spirits Wholesalers Association.
Obviously, such systems require extremely high accuracy and reliability. Researchers will test the prototypes integrated into the vehicle. They hope that the technology will be tested in a few years and will first be used in commercial and government fleets.
