Inspired by Flammulina velutipes, scientists developed materials with better hydrophobicity

According to foreign media reports, researchers have previously developed waterproof materials based on lotus leaf structures. However, a group of researchers now led by Associate Professor Paul Leu of the University of Pittsburgh, inspired by Flammulina velutipes, has created a flexible optical plastic with better hydrophobicity.

This material is in the form of ethylene terephthalate (PET), which deposits a layer of closely spaced tall and thin nanostructures with round spots on the top. Flammulina velutipes also has long, thin stems with a large round cap on the top.

The plastic called nano-enoki PET is transparent, and liquids such as water, milk, ketchup, coffee, and olive oil can slip off the surface. Even after 5000 bending cycles, these combined qualities still exist, and can make the material ideal for items such as solar cells and LEDs, and can even be used in wearable electronic devices or flexible lighting.

The super-hydrophobic properties of this material may also make plastics ideal for medical devices that prevent bacterial colonization and blood coagulation. Moreover, the production process can be scaled up, so it is not limited to making laboratory samples.

"The shape of the nano needle mushroom captures the air barrier between the liquid and the surface," Paul Leu said. "Liquids ultimately only touch less than 5% of the structure. Therefore, the liquids easily roll off or flake off after drying."

The researchers recently published a paper on this research in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A. The paper was co-authored by Sajad Haghanifar, Anthony Galante, David Pekker and Paul Leu from the Swanson School of Engineering and Luke M. Tomasovic of Georgia Institute of Technology.
