The domestic nickel inventories at major ports in April decreased by 1.28 million tons to 19.3 million tons, and the overall decline was lower than that in March. Among them, Indonesia's nickel ore decreased by 162 million tons to 13.48 million tons from 15.1 million tons at the end of March, and the Philippine nickel ore increased by 340,000 tons to 5.82 million tons from 5.48 million tons at the end of March. With the increase in imports, the inventory of nickel in the Philippines in domestic ports increased more significantly in late April. The ports where nickel inventories decreased in April were Tianjin Port and Lianyungang, which were reduced by 500,000 tons and 450,000 tons respectively.
At present, the domestic nickel ore stocks mainly include stockpiles of nickel stockpiles at the port and stocks held by downstream nickel pig iron manufacturers, and the two have overlapping parts. For nickel nickel ore stockpiles available to domestic nickel pig iron manufacturers, we think the following two points are worth noting:
First, the domestic inventories of lateritic nickel ore are still relatively large, but the high-nickel ore stock concentration is relatively high, and a large number of high-nickel ore is held centrally by a few large-scale nickel pig iron manufacturers or nickel pig iron-stainless steel integration companies. Most of the large-scale nickel pig iron raw material stocks are sufficient for use for 4-5 months, and some are even enough for one year or so. The inventory of small and medium-sized nickel pig iron manufacturers is relatively small, and many manufacturers' raw material stocks can only be maintained for one or two months.
2. Nickel deposits from the Philippines will gradually increase. It is expected that a large number of low-nickel high-iron ore mines in the Philippines will be imported into the country in the coming year. These low-grade nickel mines are more suitable for the smelting of low-grade nickel pig iron. A considerable part is considered as Iron ore to use. In addition, it is expected that China will import up to 15 million tons of medium and high grade nickel ore from the Philippines for the rest of the year. Due to the tight supply of nickel ore and the rising nickel price of the LME benchmark, this year, the price of high-grade nickel ore in the Philippines has risen sharply. This means that the raw material acquisition costs of nickel pig iron manufacturers will increase significantly.
