My scientist has tackled the key technologies for controllable preparation of single-walled carbon nanotubes
As scientists from various countries have not been able to find a preparation method for the controlled growth of carbon nanotube structures, the development of carbon-based electronics and the practical application of electronic technology have been greatly constrained. On the 26th, a good news came from Peking University. Professor Li Yan of the school researched the controllable preparation method of single-walled carbon nanotubes by using a new type of tungsten-based alloy catalyst developed independently. Academic achievements were published in the June 26 issue of Nature.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes can be seen as hollow cylinders formed by graphene curled in a certain direction. Depending on the manner of crimping (commonly referred to as "chirality"), it may be a metallic conductor or a semiconductor with a different bandgap. Practice has proved that this is a unique and excellent property of carbon nanotubes, but it also poses a great challenge for the preparation of carbon nanotubes.
Since the Japanese scientist Seiji Imaiji observed carbon nanotubes under an electron microscope in 1991, the international research on carbon nanotubes has started. However, after more than 20 years of hard work by scientists from all over the world, the issue of selective growth of single chiral SWCNTs is still pending.
The team of Professor Li Yan of Peking University successfully developed a new class of tungsten-based alloy catalysts. The nano-particles have a very high melting point and can maintain their crystalline structure and morphology in the high-temperature environment where single-walled carbon nanotubes grow. . At the same time, this kind of catalyst itself has a unique structure. It is with these excellent characteristics of the catalyst that Chinese scientists have finally cultivated single-walled carbon nanotubes with specific structures.
In 2009, the International Semiconductor Roadmap Committee recommended carbon-based electronics based on carbon nanotubes and graphene as a new generation of electronic technology that may show commercial value over the next 10 to 15 years.
