Machinery and equipment become the main export product of Germany

According to data released by the German Federal Statistical Office, in 2009, German exports of fist products were mechanical equipment, accounting for 15.1% of total exports, followed by automobiles and auto parts and chemical products, accounting for 14.9% and 9.1% respectively.
Compared with 2008, German machinery and equipment exports fell by 24.1% to 121.8 billion euros in 2009; automobiles and accessories decreased by 28.9% to 120.5 billion euros; chemical products shrank by 19.4% to 73.9 billion euros. However, the previous top three export products hit the largest foreign trade surplus in 2009: 71.8 billion euros, 58.4 billion euros and 25.3 billion euros.
In terms of imports, the largest imports of Germans in 2009 were data processors, electronics and optical products, accounting for 10.4% (70.1 billion euros) of total imports, followed by automobiles and auto parts, accounting for 9.2% (62.1 billion euros). The third is crude oil and natural gas, accounting for 8.2% (54.9 billion euros).
