Fashion and wearable combination high-tech ring can monitor security threats

Technology Trends When it comes to functional jewellery, we have seen smart earrings with fitness tracking and Safelet anti-wolf smart bracelets. However, Joseph Wang and his colleagues at the University of California, San Diego, also created a slightly different kind of smart jewelry. They make a ring that can detect chemical and biological threats in the wearer's environment.

Stylish and Wearable High-Tech Rings Detect Security Threats

This ring consists of two main parts: an electrochemical sensor cap that detects a specific compound, and a circuit board that processes data and transmits it wirelessly to a smartphone or laptop.

According to reports, the loop performs voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements and can detect various threats. However, in the current prototype form, it was optimized to detect explosives and organophosphate neurotoxins.

The researchers said: "We have demonstrated for the first time a fully integrated ring based on a variety of chemical sensor platforms that can be used to simultaneously monitor several (explosive and neurotoxin) security threats. The current work also addresses the growing demand to be stylish and accessible. The advantages of the wear area have been combined to create wearable accessories for the widespread acceptance of wearable sensor technology."

This research report was recently published in the scientific journal ACS Sensors.
